Are you eating Ceylon – the Right kind of Cinnamon?

A few days back I was just scrolling through my news feed on Facebook and came across “Eat only the real Ceylon cinnamon”. Now this was the time I realized that this common spice in my kitchen also needs identification for purity, this motivated me to research some more to find out the right facts.

 

So as I mentioned above Ceylon cinnamon possesses the real benefits, it is sourced from the plant “cinnamomum zeylacium”. What majority of us have been using is not real cinnamon but Cassia cinnamon which comes from cinnamomum cassia commonly called as Chinese cinnamon as they mostly cultivated in china and Indonesia. These 2 varieties have few common characteristics like antimicrobial, inhibit growth of fungi and yeast and regulate blood sugar. But the content of “couramin” which is said to have a natural blood thinning property varies among different varieties.

 

The level of coumarin level in Ceylon cinnamon is very small while that of cassia cinnamon is 1200 times higher and therefore ingestion in large quantities can cause serious health damage.

Some quick recipes on how you can use cinnamon

  1. Lemon water with cinnamon

Cinnamon

Boil some water along with cinnamon till it changes its color and reduces to half of the quantity, after removing from boil add lemon juice and honey.

You can even add Apple cider vinegar to it.

 

  1. Cinnamon water

Cinnamon

Simply boil cinnamon in water like I mentioned above and have it on empty stomach to start your day with a gush of antioxidants.

 

  1. Cook food using Cinnamon

Add it to the normal food that you cook at home.

 

  1. Add a pinch to your tea / coffee

Cinnamon

Add some ground cinnamon over your tea or coffee to add the right taste and benefit.

 

  1. Sprinkle on protein shake

Add a pinch of ground cinnamon to your shake and boost your metabolism.
