You might have missed a period, and maybe also taken a home pregnancy test already! Welcome to the week 4 of the pregnancy 🙂


A bond that will last lifelong…

Now as your baby has just implanted itself into the lining of the uterus, you have reached the third and an extremely important landmark of the journey; Placenta Formation. Placenta is a complex structure of blood veins and neurons, it is an organ in itself! It is round and flat. Part of it is made up of mother’s tissue, and a part is made of baby’s tissue. It is what connects the baby to the mother’s womb. Main function of placenta is to transfer nutrients from mother to the baby and  transfer waste from baby to the mother.

The Baby

Your baby is now officially known as an ‘Embryo”. It is almost the size of a poppy seed (~0.1 cm)

Following the implantation, the embryo is divided into 3 different layers of the cells that will go onto becoming different organs of the baby’s body. Ectoderm, the outer layer will develop into the Nervous System, mammary gland, skin, nails etc. Mesoderm, middle layer will make up bones, blood, heart and reproductive system. And the inner layer, Endoderm, will make intestines, lungs, liver and pancreas etc.

A tight sack of water is formed around the embryo. It is called the “Amniotic Sac” that contains the amniotic fluid. This works as a cushion for the growing fetus and acts as a barrier between it and and any possible impact.

Your Symptoms

A missed period should be the major sign of that the conception has in fact taken place. Hurry up and take a home pregnancy test. If you get a “Negative”, that is ok. Wait for a couple of days, let the hCG concentration go up and then retake it (follow the instructions precisely).

Another common symptom is sore or sensitive breasts.

Some women experience a Light Bleeding (could be implantation bleeding or breakthrough bleeding).

Lifestyle Changes

You should continue with your prenatal vitamins containing minimum of 400mcg of Folic Acid. Apart from that, having plenty of fluids and eating a well balanced and fiber rich diet is shown to help.

Cut down on coffee (no more than 1 cup!) STOP Alcohol (if you haven’t already!). Need I even mention smoking?

You can continue with light floor exercises. It will be a great idea to start incorporating pelvic floor exercises into your routine.
