Week 26                                                              Week 28

Congratulations ladies! You’re now into the last week of second trimester of your pregnancy and soon you’ll be entering the last trimester. Wow! As you look forward to the third trimester, be prepared for some pretty embarrassing stuff (like having to pee all the time – and maybe even when you don’t mean to!). It’s all par for the late-pregnancy course and totally temporary. It’s time to head down the home stretch. Are you ready?

Baby’s Size

Your baby is the size of a Lettuce Head!

When you’re 27 weeks pregnant, your baby is somewhere between 35 and 38 centimeters long and weighs approximately 900 grams. But your baby’s not just getting bigger, he or she is also getting smarter.

Baby’s Development

After being fused shut for more than four months, your baby’s eyelids can now open. Along with the visual part of her brain being active and most eye structures complete, this means that your baby can now see lights and shadows around him or her.

Your baby can already be lulled to sleep by rocking from your movements. Your daily chores can feel like rocking to your baby, thanks to the cushion of the amniotic fluid, all your baby will feel is gentle swaying.

Your baby will gain approximately half a kilogram over the next month, but it still has 13 more weeks to go till he or she is ready for the outside world. Though the baby is growing quickly, baby’s brain and lungs are still immature. Baby’s practicing inhaling and exhaling with his or her rapidly developing lungs.

Your baby may start to recognize your voice as well as your partner’s. Sounds may be muffled, though, because the ears are still covered with vernix, the thick waxy coating that protects the skin from becoming chapped by the amniotic fluid.

Your Pregnant Belly

Healthy weight gain at 27 weeks pregnant is around 10 to 15 kg and if you’re 27 weeks pregnant with twins, you’ve probably gained more weight, about 15 to 17 kg.

You’re probably feeling a ton of kicks inside that 27 weeks pregnant belly, twice as many if you’re 27 weeks pregnant with twins. You may even feel tiny hiccups, which are like patterns of little twitches. For now, sit back and enjoy the kicks and jabs. Next week, you should start counting kicks to make sure baby seems consistently active from day to day.

Your Symptoms

Your breasts keep changing throughout your pregnancy, and maybe even beyond. You may have found that the areola, the dark part of the breast surrounding the nipple, got darker in the first trimester. Now, the dark pigmented skin may extend and cover up to half of the breast. This is nature’s way of visually directing your baby towards her feed. It’s a temporary change that will probably disappear by your baby’s first birthday.

You might find that you have an extremely vivid nightlife once you fall asleep. These dramatic dreams may be due to the extra hormones that are coursing through your body. These could also be your mind’s way of dealing with the range of thoughts and emotions you’re experiencing.

Mood swings may not be anything new to you but they’re still hard to cope with. Around your 27th week of pregnancy, chances are these won’t occur as regularly as in your first trimester, but don’t be surprised if you feel sudden changes in your mood, especially during this period. Mood swings are normal, so just give yourself some self care when they strike. Don’t be afraid to ask your partner for some help when you’re feeling delicate.

Your Week 27 Checklist!

  • Expect more dramatic or vivid dreams, which may be due to the extra hormones.
  • Practices labor exercises.
